Ramkot Fort Mangla Dam is located at opposite side of Mirpur Azad Kashmir. This picturesque place is located 135 km away from Islamabad. Ramkot Fort is a major landmark of Mangla and Mirpur city which is surrounded by River Jehlum. The fort is basically situated on the top of the hill. When we talk about the history of Ramkot Fort we came to know the in 16th and 17th century Muslim rulers build different Forts for the purpose of protecting their boundaries. Ramkot fort is a fort from those forts which was built by the Sikh maharaja of Kashmir who was later known by the name Ramkot. Over the site of an old Hindu Temple this fort was built. From Mirpur it takes only 45 minutes to reach at this Fort.
The fort has the appeal of a traditional Scottish castle with its amazing scenic beauty and rich architectural value. The Structure of Ramkot Fort epitomizes the Muslim military architecture, being filled with war mechanism. The single entrance to the fort demonstrates smart war strategy. There is a water tank at the front against the background of a building on a raised plinth. In 1992 a museum was built here by the Government of Pakistan. Artistic models, paintings and several specimens of rocks are there in this museum.
Located on the opposite of Mirpur town,Ramkot fort is accessible through mangala lake(dam) on boat. Accompanied with beautiful scenic surroundings, mangala is the 16th largest dam in the world. When we talk about the history of this dam we came to know that it was completed in 1967. The structure of the dam rose 453 feet above ground level, was about 10,300 feet (3,140 meters) wide at its crest, and had a volume of 85.5 million cubic yards (65.4 million cubic meters) at the time of its completion. Mangla Dam was constructed at a cost of Rs. 15.587 billion (US$1.473 billion) with the funding being provided by the World Bank and the ASIAN Development Bank. Mangla Dam was first development project in Pakistan which was started to reduce shortcoming of water and strengthen irrigation system
